Progression Management – What Does it Mean?

EDT Lesson Four

Failing a driving test can be pretty discouraging, especially due to issues related to "progression management." Here's an explanation of what these terms mean and how they can lead to failing a driving test:

1 - Progress Moving Off

Definition

This refers to the ability to start driving efficiently from a stationary position.

Common Reasons for Failing

Inefficient Start
  • Taking too long to move off, causing inconvenience to other road users.
Rolling Backwards
  • Especially on a hill start, rolling backward can be dangerous.
Stalling the Engine
  • Repeatedly stalling can indicate a lack of control.
Progress management on the open road

2 - Progress on the Straight

Definition

Maintaining appropriate speed and lane discipline while driving on straight sections of the road.

Common Reasons for Failing

Driving Too Slowly
  • Holding up traffic unnecessarily.
Unsteady Speed
  • Continually varying speed in a manner that is not justified by road conditions.

3 - Progress Overtaking

Definition

Safely and efficiently overtaking other vehicles.

Common Reasons for Failing

Hesitation
  • Taking too long or hesitating to make the decision to overtake can be dangerous.
Misjudgment
  • Failing to correctly judge the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles.
Insufficient Acceleration
  • Not accelerating effectively to safely complete the overtaking manoeuvre.

4 - Progress at Junctions

Definition

Managing speed and timing when approaching and crossing or turning at junctions.

Common Reasons for Failing

Hesitation
  • Delaying unnecessarily at junctions when it is safe to proceed.
Poor Timing
  • Misjudging gaps in traffic and causing other drivers to brake or swerve.
Stopping inappropriately
  • Stopping at times when the way is clear and creating confusion or potential hazards.

5 - Progress at Roundabouts

Definition

Entering, navigating, and exiting roundabouts efficiently and safely.

Common Reasons for Failing

Hesitation
  • Not taking advantage of safe opportunities to enter the roundabout.
Misjudgment
  • Misjudging the speed and distance of other vehicles on the roundabout.
Lane Discipline
  • Failing to stay in the correct lane or change lanes correctly on multi-lane roundabouts.

6 - Progress at Traffic Lights

Definition

Handling traffic lights correctly, including the timing and manner of moving off.

Common Reasons for Failing

Delayed Start
  • Not moving off promptly when the light turns green.
Jumping Lights
  • Starting before the light turns green, which is both dangerous and illegal.
Not Observing Signals Properly
  • Failing to recognise or react to light changes, causing confusion or delay.

7 - Progress Changing Lanes

Definition

Successfully and safely switching lanes.

Common Reasons for Failing

Hesitation
  • Taking too long to decide or execute a lane change when there is a safe opportunity.
Poor Situational Awareness
  • Not checking mirrors and blind spots properly, leading to unsafe lane changes.
Miscommunication
  • Not signalling adequately or early enough for other drivers to understand your intention.

In summary, these "progress" aspects emphasise the importance of maintaining an appropriate speed and efficient movement while driving. Excessive hesitation or improper judgment can lead to unsafe situations and result in failing the driving test. Adequate practice and developing good driving habits can help address these common issues.
