Every life lost on the road leaves behind heartbreak for families, friends, and communities. Behind the statistics are real people and real sorrow. So when we talk about road fatalities, it matters not just to count the numbers, but to understand how those figures compare with other countries - especially here in Europe, where travel and driving patterns are similar (recent national coverage on rising road deaths).

In 2024, Ireland recorded 174 people killed on its roads - a slight decrease from the 181 deaths seen in 2023. While this is welcome news that the total fell compared with the previous year, 174 deaths in one year is still far too many (official 2024 road death statistics from the Road Safety Authority) for our roads and our families.

Over the past decade, most European countries have seen road deaths fall substantially thanks to safer vehicles, better infrastructure, and targeted enforcement campaigns. The EU average has dropped from around 60 deaths per million people ten years ago to roughly the mid-40s today.

Ireland, too, saw lower overall numbers in 2024 than in 2023. But that doesn’t mean the risk is gone. Many of those fatalities involved young drivers, and a large proportion occurred on rural roads - patterns that point to specific challenges for road safety policy and driver behaviour.

If driving feels mentally exhausting, stressful, or like you are constantly second-guessing yourself, you are not alone. Overthinking is a normal part of learning to drive, and with the right support, it does pass.

What Is Overthinking While Driving?

Overthinking happens when a learner driver tries to consciously control every single action behind the wheel.

Instead of driving smoothly and naturally, the mind is busy running a constant internal commentary:

“Did I check that mirror properly?”

“Am I too slow?”

“What if I make a mistake here?”

“Everyone is watching me.”

This mental overload can make even simple situations feel difficult.

Common Signs of Overthinking in Learner Drivers

Overthinking does not always look like panic. Often, it shows up as:

Hesitation at junctions or roundabouts

Taking a long time to make decisions

Repeating mirror checks excessively

Forgetting basic routines under pressure

Feeling drained after short lessons or practice drives

Losing confidence after small mistakes

Parents often describe their son or daughter as “capable, but overthinking everything”.

Why Learner Drivers Overthink

Driving Is Still New

For learners, nothing is automatic yet. Steering, pedals, gears, mirrors, signals, road signs and other traffic all compete for attention. The brain tries to manage everything consciously, which quickly becomes overwhelming.

Fear of Making Mistakes

Many learners worry about stalling, holding up traffic, or being judged by other drivers. This fear pushes the brain into analysis mode rather than observation mode.

Test Pressure

The closer the driving test gets, the more learners try to “drive perfectly”. Unfortunately, trying too hard often leads to hesitation and mistakes.

High Expectations

Learners who want to do well, or who feel pressure to pass quickly, are especially prone to overthinking. It usually comes from caring, not from lack of ability.

How Overthinking Affects Driving

Overthinking can actually make driving less safe by:

Slowing reaction times

Causing missed gaps at junctions

Reducing awareness of the bigger picture

Increasing tension in the steering and pedals

Undermining confidence

Driving works best when skills become automatic. Overthinking keeps skills stuck in the “thinking about it” stage instead of the “doing it naturally” stage.

How Learner Drivers Can Reduce Overthinking

Focus on the Priority

At any moment, ask: “What is the most important thing right now?”

Usually, it is safe observation, not perfect technique.

Trust the Routine

Driving routines exist to reduce mental load. Once learned, trust them instead of re-analysing every step.

Accept Mistakes as Learning

Mistakes are part of learning to drive. Even experienced drivers make them. One mistake does not undo progress.

Slow Your Breathing

If your thoughts are racing, take one slow breath. Calming the body helps calm the mind far faster than trying to “think positive”.

Build Experience

Confidence comes from practice in different conditions, not from overthinking scenarios. Repetition turns skills into habits.

Advice for Parents Supporting a Learner Driver

Parents play a big role in confidence, often without realising it.

Avoid Constant Corrections

Too much instruction can increase self-doubt. Trust the instructor to handle technique.

Praise Calm Decisions

Not just outcomes. Handling a situation safely matters more than being perfect.

Normalise Nerves

Reassure learners that nerves and overthinking are normal and temporary.

Keep Practice Drives Low Pressure

Practice is learning time, not test time. Confidence grows faster in a relaxed environment.

When Overthinking Starts to Fade

Most learners reach a point where driving feels easier and less mentally tiring. This happens when:

Controls become automatic

Observation improves

Confidence replaces constant self-checking

This shift cannot be rushed. It comes from good instruction, steady practice, and patience.

Final Thoughts

Overthinking while driving is not a sign of being a bad driver. It is a sign of caring and trying to do things correctly.

With the right support, learner drivers move from:

“Am I doing this right?”
to
“I know what I’m doing.”

That is when confident, safe driving really begins.

How many grade two faults are allowed? (Official RSA rules)

Under the RSA Marking Guidelines 2025, a candidate fails if they receive:

9 or more Grade 2 faults overall

4 of the same Grade 2 fault under one specific aspect

6 or more Grade 2 faults under the same marking heading

Any Grade 3 fault

Maximum Grade 2 faults allowed overall: 8.

Why Learners fail with 'only small mistakes'

Because patterns matter.

Repeated Grade 2 faults show:

Weakness in a core skill

Lack of consistency

Reduced overall driving competence

The RSA marking system rewards safe, consistent driving, not occasional brilliance.

Key takeaway for learner drivers

You do not fail for being nervous.

You fail for risk, danger, or repeated weakness.

Understanding how Grade 2 faults become Grade 3 faults helps learners focus on safety and judgement rather than perfection.

Imagine this scenario.

You arrive at the test centre feeling slightly nervous but capable. The test begins smoothly. Then, at a busy junction, you hesitate for a moment longer than usual. A car approaches, and you decide to wait.

Immediately, the Chimp reacts:

“I should have gone”

“The examiner thinks I cannot judge gaps”

“I am holding people up”

“I am failing this test”

Your heart rate increases. Breathing becomes shallow. The Chimp is now in control.

At the next junction, instead of calmly assessing the situation, you rush. You misjudge slightly, pull out awkwardly, and pick up a fault. Not because you cannot drive, but because the Chimp has overridden the Human.

This is not a lack of skill. It is a loss of emotional control.

Being observed and judged

Silence from the examiner

A one-off event with no second chance that day

The Chimp interprets this as danger. It does not understand pass marks or marking sheets. It only feels threat.

Trying to “get rid of nerves” does not work, because the Chimp cannot be removed. The goal is to manage it.

The first step is understanding that nerves are normal. Feeling anxious does not mean you are weak or unprepared.

Telling yourself “I should not feel like this” often makes things worse. Instead, acknowledge it:

“I feel nervous, and that is normal”

“This is my Chimp reacting, not reality”

This alone reduces the Chimp’s power.

Whether you are a learner driver or an experienced motorist, adapting your driving style during winter is essential for staying safe.

Here are five practical and professional winter driving tips from Get2Drive to help you stay in control when conditions deteriorate.

 1. Slow Down and Increase Your Following Distance

One of the biggest mistakes drivers make in winter is driving at normal speeds. Cold temperatures reduce tyre grip and increase stopping distances, particularly on wet or icy roads.

Use the “tyres and tarmac” rule in traffic. You should be able to see the rear tyres of the vehicle in front touching the road, with clear tarmac between you and them. In wet conditions, double your normal following distance. In icy or snowy conditions, increase it even further.

Slower speeds give you more time to react and reduce the risk of skidding or losing control.

From early-morning fog rolling in across Lough Foyle to pitch-black rural roads at 5 pm in winter, local conditions require skill, awareness, and confidence.

The good news? Every learner can master these skills with the proper guidance. This guide breaks down the key techniques you need to stay safe and feel in control when conditions are less than ideal, whether you’re preparing for your driving test or building everyday road confidence.

Night vision is naturally limited, and Donegal’s rural roads often have little or no street lighting, meaning hazards appear much later. Glare from oncoming headlights can also make it difficult to judge distance or lane position.

Essential Night-Driving Skills

Use full beam where safe, but dip it early when traffic appears.

Look towards the left verge to avoid glare from oncoming lights.

Drive slower than in daylight, as your stopping distance must match your visibility range.

Interpret reflective road studs to understand bends, junctions, and positioning.

Night-Time Hazards in Donegal

Walkers on unlit roads

Cyclists without proper lights

Wildlife

Slow-moving machinery returning from fields

Blind crests and bends in rural areas such as Moville, Greencastle, or Clonmany

Rain affects everything: your visibility, your tyres’ ability to grip, and the way your car responds to braking. On roads like the N13 or R238, pooling water can also create dangerous aquaplaning situations.

Safe Rain-Driving Tips

Put headlights on dipped beam so others can see you clearly.

Reduce your speed significantly - wet stopping distances are at least doubled.

Increase your following distance to give yourself more reaction time.

Use wipers and demisters correctly to keep your vision clear.

Avoid harsh braking and sharp steering which can cause skids.

Aquaplaning: What It Is & What To Do

Aquaplaning happens when your tyres ride over a film of water, losing grip completely.

If it happens:

Don’t brake.

Ease off the accelerator.

Hold the wheel steady.

Let the tyres grip again naturally.

Fog removes contrast, depth perception, and visibility. In thick fog, you often don’t see hazards until you’re extremely close to them.

This is especially common in places like:

Mamore Gap

Ballyliffin to Clonmany

Rural patches around Gleneely

Morning fog along the Lough Foyle coastline

Safe Fog-Driving Techniques

Use dipped headlights AND fog lights (but switch fog lights off when visibility improves).

Drive slowly and smoothly - jerky movements are dangerous in low visibility.

Increase your distance immensely - triple is ideal.

Avoid overtaking, no matter how tempting.

If visibility drops to dangerous levels, pull in safely and wait.

Fog rewards patience. Trying to “push on” is one of the key causes of fog-related collisions.
